The History Of Reiki
Reiki can be roughly transalated to mean 'Universal' or 'Spiritual' (Rei) 'Life Force' (Ki), the word Reiki coming from the Japanese language. Ki is also known as Qi or Chi in different languages and can be found in many other practices such as Tai Chi, Aikido, Qi Gong etc.
Various forms of Reiki healing techniques have existed throughout history, and usually involved the practitioner building up energy within themselves through various exercises before using that energy for the required purpose. However the use of this energy would leave the practitioner feeling depleted.
In the latter half of the 19th century Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk who studied and practiced Kiko (a Japanese form of Qi Gong), wondered if a way existed to heal without depleting ones own energy. Dr. Usui studied greatly in his search for an answer and eventually, during a 21 day retreat on Mt. Karuma where he fasted, prayed and meditated, he received a powerful enlightenment through a spiritual light entering the crown of his head in the form of a Reiki
attunement.
He realised that he had been given a new ability; the ability to channel universal healing energy without depleting his own energy reserves.
Reiki was brought to the West by Mrs. Hawayo Takata of Hawaii in the 1940's, after learning the
techniques from Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, a student of Dr. Usui's. The techniques were adapted somewhat to make them more acceptable to Western culture but the essence of Reiki and its ability to assist our bodies in healing themselves remains intact.
Attunements and teachings to Reiki are primarily given to provide healing for the self, although the Reiki energy is now widely used to assist others with their own healing.
What Happens During A Reiki Treatment?
Firstly it is important to note that, even though Reiki is seen as a 'spiritual' form of energy healing, this does not mean that any particular religious beliefs are necessary to practice or receive a Reiki treatment. It is available for everyone.
A treatment usually takes place with the client either sitting in a chair or lying on a couch. A sitting treatment usually lasts for about 20 minutes and a lying treatment around 1 hour although times may vary according to the needs of the client. The client remains fully clothed throughout the treatment.
The practitioner will place their hands on, or just above the surface of the clients body at various locations around the meridian system or the chakras of the body. The Universal Energy of Reiki will then be channelled by the practitioner into the clients energy system assisting the clients own body in clearing blockages and disturbances in their system. As such, Reiki works to assist healing on all of the emotional, mental and physical levels.
During treatments the client will usually feel relaxed and may experience any number of things including visual and physical sensations. Even if the client does not experience any feeling, the Reiki is still working for the good of the client.
