The History Of EFT
EFT was developed by Gary Craig, a Stanford trained Engineer, in 1997 based on techniques learnt from Dr. Roger Callahan's Thought Field Therapy (TFT).
The roots of EFT and other similar techniques can be traced back to ancient Tibetan acupuncture around 4000 B.C. up throught Chinese acupuncture and Japanese accupressure, which was then Westernised and from which applied and behavioural kinesiology was developed. From these, TFT and then EFT came into being.
These ever advancing techniques, developed over the last couple of decades, are now classed as 'modern meridian therapies'.
What Are Meridian Therapies?
Our bodies rely on energy to operate throughout our everyday lives. This energy flows around us via a network of energy pathways which are known as 'meridians'.
A disruption of our meridian system can cause us to experience physical, mental and emotional upset, or in everyday terms, to feel unwell.
Meridian therapies use techniques that stimulate this energy network to effect the flow of energy and relieve us of the effects of the issues that are presenting a problem for us. Accupuncture uses fine needles inserted through the skin, Accupressure techniques use pressure applied to the body surface and EFT uses a gentle finger tapping applied at certain points of the meridian system.
So What Is EFT?
Gary Craig trained in Dr. Callahan's Thought Field Therapy, costing many thousands of dollars, but found that this technique involved a very lengthy process of determining the clients problem, then looking up the specific issues and symptoms in numerous volumes of pre-determined algorithms.
These algorithms would then determine which of the accupressure points on the meridian system were required to be tapped on to resolve the issue.
Gary, being an engineer at heart, believed that there must be a simpler way of applying the technique that could be shared and learnt by all.
He realised that across the range of algorithms there was only a certain number of meridian points that were tapped on, and that there was no negative effect if a point was tapped on that wasn't part of the algorithm. From this he created what is now known as 'The Basic Recipe' of EFT.
The Basic Recipe involves tapping on all of the identified meridian points regardless of the issue meaning that problems can be tackled quickly without the need to trawl through laborious volumes of algorithms.
Over the years, as Gary and other practitioners of his techniques have used EFT with numerous clients they have found that it is possible to treat the majority of issues using only 8 key meridian points and, although the majority of practitioners are taught using the full basic recipe, those practitioners who study EFT to a deeper level will tend to use this 8 point 'short form' or similar shortened version. As the technique is continually being developed and adapted each practitioner will have their own way of using it.
How Does It Work?
Through our many senses, we are constantly receiving many pieces of information on an unconscious as well as conscious level.
Any of these bits of information acts as a trigger by inducing a change in our energy system which in turn retrieves memories and experiences from our past, causing us to experience emotional, mental or physical feelings that we associate with those past events. Some of these feelings may be unpleasant rather than pleasant and it is these that causes us issue. Sometimes these resultant feelings can, in themselves, act as triggers, causing us further disturbance and increased upset.
What EFT does is have the client focus on the underlying issue to cause the energy system to be disrupted, and then the clients meridian points are tapped (usually by the client themselves) which causes the energy system to be 'straightened out'.
The next time the same trigger is experienced by the client their energy system remains straight and they remain free from the adverse effects that would have previously been brought up. It's that simple!
EFT is effective for most physical, mental or emotional issues including phobias, cravings and addictions, physical pains such as headaches and many other things. Once the client knows the
technique they can take it away and treat themselves!
